Behind the Canvas

Before Faith Power and Truth Holy Wars™ became a game, there was an artist developing a visual language through years of original work. This archive preserves that journey—from independent artwork and personal experience to the hand-drawn characters that now inhabit the game.

One morning. Four parts of the process.

At almost 3:00 a.m., William opens his portfolio and explains how visual impairment, large-format drawing, card proportions, and four carefully placed corner dots shape the artwork of Faith Power and Truth Holy Wars™.

The kitchen counter provides enough room for this planning demonstration. Each short chapter preserves William’s own explanation while making the process easier to follow.

01 · Why I Draw Big

William introduces his early-morning routine, 18 × 24-inch paper, visual impairment, and the Sharpies he uses for fine lines and broad black areas.

02 · Designing the Card Format

The project’s current name, standard 2.5 × 3.5-inch card proportions, and the need to reserve space for statistics all influence the composition.

03 · Art Cards and Playing Cards

Using Sparkles Rebellion and Rowan 7 as examples, William shows how one drawing can serve a vertical playable card and a landscape art card.

04 · The Four-Dot Starting Method

Before drawing Adrian Vale, William measures the usable composition and marks four corner dots so the artwork can develop without committing to heavy border lines too early.

Inside the working space

Where the drawing actually happens.

This compact corner is William’s adapted creation studio. He clears the chair, sits close to the wall-mounted paper, and works only inches from the surface so he can see each line despite optic neuropathy.

The shelves hold 18 × 24-inch paper, pens, tape, studies, finished drawings—and more than one coffee cup. The space is active rather than staged: supplies remain within reach, artwork gathers around the chair, and new characters begin beside older pieces.

What looks crowded is also functional. The chair, taped paper, nearby tools, and large drawing surface bring the work close enough for William to create by hand.

A transparent collaboration

Every line begins on paper.
