RESEARCH NOTES

01 Scope and evidence status

This is a limited source-checked comparison, not completed six-category research or a measure of how commonly people behave in these ways.

An announced decision against expulsion alongside continued imprisonment; five directional categories remain pending.

RESEARCH NOTES

02 Definitions, actors and overlapping commitments

Malatesta’s reproduced 1891 pamphlet supplies articulated anarchist commitments independently of police accusations. Its later translation/transcription is not an inspected original issue. [6]

McKenna’s historical British Liberal classification is supported by a party-history biography; Parliament separately documents his office. Party affiliation does not establish every philosophical liberal commitment, modern US identity or motive. [4] [5]

08 6. Liberal → Anarchist — Supportive interactions

On June 17, 1912, Home Secretary Reginald McKenna announced that he would not make an expulsion order against Malatesta while refusing to recommend remission of imprisonment. Retain the favorable expulsion decision together with that limit. [1]

His June 20 explanation attributes the decision to his punishment/public-interest assessment and says he had not seen the meeting report before deciding. This neither proves nor excludes every campaigning influence. [2]

The May 22 exchange links Errico Malatesta to the criminal-libel and expulsion-recommendation context. MPs’ questions about irregularities remain allegations, not established findings. [3]

RESEARCH NOTES

09 Limitations and unresolved claims

This is an announced exercise of discretion, not an acquittal, release, full pardon, endorsement of anarchism or independently established long-term protection. Original Home Office order, trial/appeal files and later residence outcomes were not inspected.

The favorable decision coexisted with custody. Trial fairness remains unresolved; neither every prosecution nor lawful enforcement is automatically harmless or persecution. No reciprocal anarchist endorsement or proven protest-caused reversal is established.

Parliament’s office record does not itself show party affiliation. The party-history source is retrospective; an uninspected publisher/book lead and generic ACLU reputation are not substitutes for actor fit. Five directions remain pending.
