RESEARCH NOTES
01 Purpose and scope
Full comparison incomplete / Needs review. Five categories remain pending; pending is not historical absence.
1. Defining Liberalism: Political liberalism denotes advocacy for individual liberties, representative democracy, constitutional limits on government power, secular governance, equality before the law, and pluralism. Liberalism must not be conflated with specific party labels, electoral factions, or universal progressive platforms.
2. Defining Pro-Choice: Pro-choice conviction strictly denotes organized political, legislative, or public advocacy aimed at protecting, securing, or expanding legal access to abortion and reproductive self-determination. It must not be automatically equated with general privacy rights, standard healthcare support, or general bodily autonomy outside reproductive decisions.
3. Overlapping Commitments vs. Intergroup Conduct: Individuals or organizations can hold both liberal and pro-choice commitments simultaneously. Parallel values or overlapping principles do not constitute an active intergroup interaction between organized counterparts.
4. Six Directional Categories: This record covers both directions across three core behavioral categories (Harmful, Ordinary/Neutral, Supportive). Supplementary commentary is subordinate to the six canonical sections.
5. Methodological Boundaries: Each directional section requires named actors, dates, exact source URLs, and inspected passages. Uninspected leads remain pending.

04 3. Liberal → Pro-Choice — Supportive interactions
On March 13, 2017, Nick Clegg voted Aye on Diana Johnson’s motion for leave to introduce the Reproductive Health (Access to Terminations) Bill. This is procedural support for a named abortion-decriminalisation initiative, not enactment or approval of every provision. Clegg is not described as a listed presenter or sponsor. Separate civil-liberties advocacy supports liberal actor fit; official vote records describe one event. Sources [1] [2] [3] [4].

08 Source inspection notes and qualifications
1. UK Parliament, Mr Nick Clegg voting record, entry for March 13, 2017, Division 176.

Locator: Reproductive Health (Access to Terminations), Voted Aye.
Confirms his individual vote; not inferred from a party total.
2. UK Parliament, Commons division page, “Reproductive Health (Access to Terminations),” March 13, 2017.
https://votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/243
Locator: Clegg, Mr Nick, Sheffield Hallam, Liberal Democrat, listed on the affirmative side; cross-checked with his individual voting entry.
The URL’s database identifier 243 differs from the sitting’s Division 176; do not confuse these identifiers. Sources 1–2 are linked official presentations of the same vote, not independent historical cases.
3. UK Parliament, Commons Hansard, March 13, 2017, Reproductive Health (Access to Terminations), motion under Standing Order 23.
https://hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2017-03-13/debates/3421466d-091b-4cae-9d24-62e9924f627d/CommonsChamber
Locators: Johnson’s opening motion and explanation; Division 176 and subsequent presentation/first-reading order (web lines 2428–2474, 2542–2551).
The motion concerned regulation of terminations and repeal of specified criminal offences. Johnson explicitly advocated decriminalisation while distinguishing it from deregulation. This establishes named pro-choice legislative advocacy rather than generic privacy/healthcare support. The House granted leave and recorded first reading. Her legal descriptions, anticipated effects, medical claims and opponents’ assertions remain attributed debate positions, not independently audited facts or current legal guidance. This parliamentary segment supplies context for the same event, not separate corroborating conduct.
4. Cabinet Office / Deputy Prime Minister’s Office / Nick Clegg, “Civil liberties speech: Deputy Prime Minister,” January 7, 2011, Institute for Government, London.
https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/civil-liberties-speech-deputy-prime-minister
Locators: individual freedom/equality before law; liberal dispersal of power and individual/community autonomy (web lines 69–74, 110–120).
Separately supports substantive political-liberal actor fit beyond party label. This earlier self-articulation is used with the later named parliamentary record; it does not prove every philosophical belief remained identical. Original script may differ from delivery. Political criticisms and empirical assertions elsewhere not independently audited.
Method and limits
