Anarchist ↔ LGBTQ+: Goldman’s Attributed Expression & Evidence Gaps

Checked passages in a typescript marked Berlin 1923 support narrowly attributed expression toward homosexual people; five directional categories remain pending.

RESEARCH NOTES

01 Scope and evidence status

This limited comparison retains supportive authored expression in selected visually checked passages of a reproduced typescript. It does not establish blanket modern LGBTQ+ affirmation, universal anarchist opinion or the full relationship between these categories.

Five directional categories remain pending. Critical language and historical stereotypes remain part of the source’s limits, not this article’s endorsed descriptions of people.

RESEARCH NOTES

02 Actors, historical terms and overlapping identities

The checked text explicitly identifies its speaker as an anarchist. Its supportive passages concern homosexual people and Hirschfeld’s work; this does not establish equal coverage of every identity in the present LGBTQ+ umbrella. [1]

Anarchist commitments and LGBTQ+ identities can overlap. Authored expression can be relevant without a formal alliance, but no reciprocal action is inferred from overlap.

05 3. Anarchist → LGBTQ+ — Supportive authored expression

In the typescript attributed to Emma Goldman and marked Berlin 1923, the opening text praises Hirschfeld’s rights work and rejects treating homosexual people as inferior or less moral. The following page explicitly connects the speaker’s anarchist identity with opposition to persecution. Retain this narrowly as attributed supportive expression, not assistance delivered, verified letter delivery or measured social effects. [1]

Locators: PDF p.2 (first text page), opening and concluding paragraphs; PDF p.3 (typed p.2), opening paragraph. The scan’s wrapper at PDF p.14 supplies the year marker, not an independently verified creation, dispatch, receipt or publication day.

RESEARCH NOTES

09 Provenance, textual differences and limits

The 14-page reproduction’s front wrapper identifies the International Institute of Social History, Emma Goldman Papers, Inv.nr.208 / ARCH00520. The file was obtained from the public Archive file listing. Direct IISH catalog access failed, so physical-original examination, autograph authentication and independent repository confirmation beyond the visible wrapper are not claimed. [1] [2]

Selected images at PDF pp.1–4 and 13–14 were visually inspected. This was targeted collation, not certification of the entire transcription. Handwritten revisions around a clause on the first text page are rendered differently by the derivative versions; spelling and deletion treatment also vary. No uncertain wording is quoted as settled, and handwriting authorship is not independently established. [3] [4]

Use the scan’s Berlin 1923 marker only. The host’s January 1 date and uploader’s quoted March dating are not adopted without independent support. The two transcriptions derive from the same scan and are not independent corroboration.

The surrounding text contains stereotypes and disparaging generalizations, and its closing page requests removal of Michel’s photograph from a gallery. Do not infer Michel’s sexuality, endorse the text’s medical/scientific assertions or turn this qualified expression into blanket modern affirmation. PDF pp.3–4 and 13. [1]

Retrospective claims about earlier advocacy do not independently establish those events’ dates, audience effects or priority. No reciprocal support, organizational alliance or outcome is inferred. An autobiography was opened as an alternative lead but not adopted because its host’s bibliographic metadata needed further checking.

A specific, qualified expression can inform individual character choices without assigning universal alliances, moral scores or gameplay modifiers to identities. No new mechanic is adopted.
