Investigative Interviewing, Rapport & Corroboration

Memory retrieval, careful questions, and independent evidence—with clear limits on treating confidence, consistency, or behavior as proof.

RESEARCH NOTES

01 Research question

How can an interview support a witness’s account while keeping memory retrieval separate from establishing what happened?

RESEARCH NOTES

02 Overview

An interview produces an account to investigate. Patient listening, careful questions and comparison with independent evidence can inform that work; no technique guarantees a complete or accurate account.

03 What the sources contribute

Fisher and Geiselman’s practitioner book describes the cognitive interview for cooperative eyewitnesses. It covers rapport, memory retrieval, question wording, pauses and interview structure. This is a book framework, not one experiment validating every technique. [1]

Williamson’s edited volume addresses investigative interviewing through research, rights and regulation. An edited collection brings together different contributions; it should not be cited as a single empirical study. [2]

RESEARCH NOTES

04 Frameworks & independent corroboration

The cognitive interview and the broader PEACE interviewing framework are distinct. Memory elicitation is also separate from corroboration: a repeated story is not independently confirmed simply because several people repeat the same original source.

RESEARCH NOTES

05 Memory, demeanor & uncertainty

Rapport, detailed recall and consistency do not establish truthfulness. An inconsistency alone does not establish deception. Hesitation, guardedness and wording can prompt further questions; this entry does not treat them as reliable signs of lying.

RESEARCH NOTES

06 Using the books carefully

The sources provide frameworks and research context. Specific claims about outcomes, populations or accuracy need the relevant study or chapter and its limitations. This overview does not provide a lie-detection method or guarantee investigative success.
