RESEARCH NOTES

01 Scope and evidence status

One ceremonial public expression is retained. Five directions remain unestablished. The Traditional Values classification concerns particular inherited practices and their transmission, not religious identity alone or blanket political conservatism.

RESEARCH NOTES

02 Actor and community classification

Clegg’s January 2011 script advocates individual freedom, equality before the law and dispersal of concentrated state power. These commitments establish substantive political-liberal context beyond his party label. The script may differ from delivery; policy announcements are not verified outcomes. [2]

The Oshwal Association of the UK’s October 2014 magazine announces Diwali rites and cultural displays. A separate report in the same issue describes explaining Jain rituals to younger members during Paryushan. This provides dated evidence of observance and intergenerational transmission within a named British community. Paryushan is a different festival; it is continuity context, not the event Clegg greeted. [3]

The magazine also calls the community progressive and discusses adapting customs. Preserving inherited practices does not imply agreement with every traditional rule or partisan conservatism. No blanket classification of all Jains is adopted. [3]

05 3. Liberal → Traditional Values — Supportive ceremonial public expression

On October 23, 2014, Nick Clegg published favorable Diwali greetings to those observing the festival, recognizing distinct Hindu, Sikh and Jain meanings. This is a bounded example of liberal public recognition of inherited observance. [1]

The Oshwal magazine independently supplies community-practice context: its President’s Message announces October 23 Chopada Pujan, October 24 Dwar Opening and October 26 celebrations with regional cultural displays. These are announcements, not independently verified completion. OAUK is an example within the broad observer community, not a specifically named recipient organization in Clegg’s message. [3]

The Institute of Jainology also reproduces Clegg’s greeting. Republication is not a separate speech, proof of personal receipt, political endorsement or reciprocal support. [4]

09 Qualifications and remaining work

The published greeting does not establish a direct Clegg–OAUK meeting, funding, practical protection, agreement with every customary rule or measured effects. No claim is made that every member received the message. His October 22 reception is separate from the October 23 publication. [1]

The community magazine’s printed October 2014 date was verified on selected pages; its 2023 upload path is not the issue date. The cover was not verified. The community-site greeting reproduction displays no verified publication date; its URL year alone cannot establish chronology. [3] [4]

The North Area Paryushan account establishes reported teaching across generations, not a Diwali/Mahavira ceremony at OAUK. No ancient origin date, unchanging practice or metaphysical claim is independently established. Hindu, Sikh and Jain interpretations are not interchangeable. [3]

Earlier general parenting-choice statements remain insufficient as independent conduct examples. Five directions require separate evidence.

HOLY WARS · FICTION

10 What this means for Holy Wars

Public recognition of a practice need not mean shared theology or universal political agreement. This example creates no automatic alliance, collective moral score or gameplay mechanic.
