RESEARCH NOTES

01 Scope and evidence status

This is a limited source-checked comparison, not completed six-category research or a measure of how commonly people behave in these ways.

One attributed memoir account of detention and a restricted funeral-attendance concession; four directional categories remain pending.

RESEARCH NOTES

02 Definitions, actors and overlapping commitments

Socialism includes collective, cooperative and decentralized traditions as well as state-socialist programs. Some anarchists are socialists; these categories are not mutually exclusive populations.

For this case, identify the specifically Bolshevik-led Soviet authorities and their declared economic program. The reproduced 1918 constitution supports classification, not proof of implementation, consent or the memoir’s allegations. Malatesta’s compilation supplies an overlapping socialist-anarchist conception, not a conduct case. [3] [4]

06 4. Socialist → Anarchist — Harmful interactions

In her account of Kropotkin’s February 1921 funeral, Emma Goldman describes anarchists held in Moscow and obstacles to participation. Retain as her participant narrative of detention/restriction, not adjudicated findings on individual charges. [1]

08 6. Socialist → Anarchist — Supportive interactions

The same account reports seven temporary releases for attendance while Butyrki prisoners did not attend. Preserve the continuing-custody context, excluded prisoners and disputed promises. This is a narrowly attributed accommodation within a coercive setting, not general liberty, reconciliation or endorsement. [1]

RESEARCH NOTES

09 Limitations and unresolved claims

Sections 4 and 6 draw on ONE account/event, not independent corroboration or a moral balance sheet. Goldman distinguishes narrated events, reported official communications and later information from prisoners; not every detail was witnessed. Her explanations of officials’ motives are not independently established.

No independent prison files, official resolution, individual prisoner classification, numbers or subsequent outcomes were verified. Neither the concession nor constitutional declaration validates detention. Do not generalize to every socialist tradition.

The host’s editorial note says the final twelve chapters first appeared in My Further Disillusionment in Russia (1924), with a combined volume in 1925. Do not date this chapter casually to the 1923 first volume. Malatesta’s page combines differently dated passages, despite its 1923 header. [2] [4]

The Goldman/Berkman advocacy letter alleging shootings is an unretained lead, not independent funeral corroboration or verified execution evidence. Original editions/manuscripts, official records and independent historical research remain useful checks.
